Tornados

Tornado Preparedness and Survival

Tornado preparedness is like preparing for any other crisis, the best way to survive is to have a plan before it happens b/c tornadoes often strike with little or no warning giving you hardly any time to think. In most cases you have a decent amount of time advance warning when a tornado is coming. Technology has gotten much better but still knowing what to do is essential is surviving the tornado even if you know it is coming. Just b/c you can't see the tornado doesn't mean it's not there. You don't actually see a tornado, you see the debris and other stuff the tornado picks up.

Hurricanes

How to Survive a Hurricane

The best and easiest way to survive a hurricane is to just get the heck out of town. Just leave. There really is no excuse anyone should ever be killed by a hurricane. There is so much advanced warning there really is no reason to not get out of the way. Yes we would all like to protect our stuff and it’s a major inconvenience to leave and board everything up but is it really worth risking your life or even that of your family? Listen to authorities, follow evacuation signs and take you and your family out of town. Great time to go camping!!!

Floods

Flood Safety - What To Do In Flash Floods and Slow Rising Floods

According to the History Channel a 6 MPH current is like standing in a 150 MPH wind.

There are two different types of floods and each one comes with its own challenges when trying to prepare. The first type of flood is a flash flood and it these typically are very fast rising waters which can sneak up on people in dry river beds, gullies, drainage ditches and even roads. They consist of fast moving water that typically carry with it rocks, logs and other dangerous debris that can kill you or at least injure you or your companions. If a flash flood warning is issued, seek higher ground immediately. Sometimes the first sign of a flash flood is the wall of water.

Fires

Fire Safety

There are different types of fires that we might encounter in life and each has it's own challenge.

First there are fires to structures that we might be in such as libraries, schools, sporting events and worst case scenario, our homes. If we are in a structure that is on fire the first thing to do is to remain calm. Priority number one is to get out of the building as soon as possible and help any others who might need help exiting the building. Head for the nearest exit in an orderly fashion, if you don't see an exit and are unfamiliar with the lay out of the building you are in, ask someone who might be heading out if they are know where the exit is and follow them. If they are looking to then both of you work together to find someone who is familiar with the building. If you see smoke get on your hands and knees and head away from the source of the smoke if identifiable. DO NOT use elevators since you have no idea when the power is going to go out or if you might be heading right into the fire.

What To Do In An Earthquake

Earthquakes can hit a huge area and have drastically varying levels of damage. When an Earth Quake hits there is no warning what so ever so it’s tough to be prepared. If your house or apartment is destroyed along with all your supplies then it’s best to go to a family member’s home until you can get help from someone else or get back on your feet. However just because your house or domicile wasn’t destroyed doesn’t mean you aren’t affected.
