It seems like every year we have more and more people dying due to excessive cold of getting stuck in blizzards. This is such a stupid way to die. All it takes is an ounce of common sense to survive either of the above. We no longer live in the stone ages and weather reports today are fairly accurate so there is no way you shouldn’t be able to prepare or get caught out in the blizzard.
If you get stuck out in a blizzard you either have your car or you don’t. If you have your car stay there and wait it out. Hopefully you were smart enough to keep a small survival kit in your car to get you through these couple of days. You can always run your heater if you have gas. You can keep some snow in the car while the heater is on and use that for drinking water as it melts. You don’t really want to eat snow if you are are freezing for obvious reasons. If you run out of gas and the weather clears up a bit and you can get outside the car…remember that tires burn great and this will help in keeping you warm and even better is that burning tires give off a turn of smoke so make sure you burn them during the day so they can follow the black smoke directly to you.
If you are stuck out in the wilderness in a blizzard you have to get out of the wind and snow ASAP. If you have a tent…set it up as far out of the wind as possible.
If you are at home make sure you have enough food to last you a few days and enough fuel to keep you and your family warm. Please check on your neighbors and relatives as often as possible when the cold turns deadly. Blankets, blankets and more blankets are obvious if your heater just can’t cut it or if for some reason you don’t have heat. If you don’t have heat, try and go to a neighbor’s or a family member’s. The cold is a under estimated killer. The worst thing that can happen and It often does is if the power goes out when the cold is deadly of there is a blizzard occurring. In that case it is critic that you have enough heat to keep you and your family warm. If for some reason you don’t have a heat source and the cold is deadly gather all the inhabitants in one of your smaller rooms toward the middle of your home if possible. Try and seal off all areas where heat might escape from your room and then snuggle!!! Body warmth is what keeps the emperor penguins alive through the Antarctic winter! It is good to try and do this prior to running out of your heating source if you have the option. This way you have time to heat up the inner room and hopefully trap some of that hot air in prior to running out and having to fight the elements on your own.
The most dangerous thing about the cold is hypothermia. Hypothermia is subnormal chilling of the body and being able to fight it off is being able to identify the symptoms. There are three stages to hypothermia and they are listed below and come courtesy of lazymanandhealth.com
