Fire Safety

There are different types of fires that we might encounter in life and each has it's own challenge.

First there are fires to structures that we might be in such as libraries, schools, sporting events and worst case scenario, our homes. If we are in a structure that is on fire the first thing to do is to remain calm. Priority number one is to get out of the building as soon as possible and help any others who might need help exiting the building. Head for the nearest exit in an orderly fashion, if you don't see an exit and are unfamiliar with the lay out of the building you are in, ask someone who might be heading out if they are know where the exit is and follow them. If they are looking to then both of you work together to find someone who is familiar with the building. If you see smoke get on your hands and knees and head away from the source of the smoke if identifiable. DO NOT use elevators since you have no idea when the power is going to go out or if you might be heading right into the fire.

Home Fire

If you are in the home, in order to make sure you and your family are safe is to have a plan. Have two different meeting places outside the house. The first meeting place will needs to be outside in the neighbors yard or something and the secondary meeting place is in case the first meeting place has been compromised. Your first line of defense to keeping you and your family safe are good smoke alarms. Make sure your alarms are in working order according to the instructions provided with your smoke detector and check them monthly. The more time you and your family have to escape a fire the better chances you have for survival. According to FEMA a house fire can become deadly in two minutes and engulf the entire house in fire in as little as five minutes.

Make sure you have A, B, C rated fire extinguishers and everyone knows how to use them. If you can put out a fire before it spreads then do, but don't risk your life in order to do so. The only thing that can't be replaced in a fire is you and your families' lives.

If you need to escape from the second story of your home make sure those who might need to get out have a small hammer to break a window and either a rope or chain ladder to climb down.
