Proper Camping/Survival Sanitation and Waste Disposal
When tragedies happen and food and water run short most people don’t die due to lack of water or food, most die from disease, infections and all sort of nasty illnesses so when a crisis happens it makes sense try and stay sanitary and keep things as clean as possible. Bleach goes a long way in helping to make this happen. You can not only use Bleach to clean surfaces, dishes and clothing but you can also use bleach to make clean drinking water. If there has been on outbreak try and avoid contact with others or whatever it may be that is spreading the outbreak. Whenever possible use masks and sterile gloves that you can throw away or better yet…burn. Hand sanitizer is a nice addition as well.
If the power goes out and for some reason the toilets aren’t flushing the last thing you want to do is keep using them. You need to be able to dispose of your waste. It’s so important that during World War 2 the British has STRICT rules on how to dispose of their waste.
It required digging a fairly deep hole, around 8 inches will be fine, putting a crate with a hole in it and then cover the hole with some sort of cloth when not being used to keep the bugs away. If you don't have a crate and some cloth, just put some soil over each use. The Germans just went and took dumps in the desert. Guess who had all sorts of flies around their camps. Guess who got dysentery and all sorts of funky illnesses. Disposing of waste is critical and often over looked.
If you have several people you can build a latrine by digging a ditch about a foot wide and about 8 inches deep and 3 or feet long. Place the soil you remove from the hole on the side and as people relieve themselves in thew hole take some of the soil on the side and place it over the waste. Once you leave camp, place the rest of the soil back in the latrine and let mother nature take over.
Sanitation can mean so many things but basically keep your environment clean. Rodents won’t stay if there is nothing to eat. Keeping bugs and small rodents away from your family in times of trouble is just as critical as disposing of your waste. It’s one of those things which are often overlooked but very important. Those who live in the South will have a bigger problem with this than their brethren in the North.
