No one goes through life with out running into some sort of deadly situation...

It is silly to walk around living in fear and it is just as silly not to educate yourself about potential dangers and how to survive them if you ever find yourself in a natural or unnatural deadly situation. A few minutes of reading could save you or your family's life. You may prepare for certain deadly situations that you might encounter near and around your home and office but if you travel, remember that different areas may present different dangers. Everyone always thinks it could never happen to them.

You never know when Mother Nature or humankind might strike and show us their ugly side. Below are ten things that you might actually encounter that can and do kill.

Earthquakes - Earthquakes happen all over the world. There is no way of predicting them and the size of area affected can be hundreds of square miles. The initial Earthquake is not always the last earthquake and the aftershocks can be even stronger. Since there is no warning when an Earthquake strikes, knowing what to do without think can help ensure your survival.

Extreme Temperatures - At one time or another almost everyone faces deadly heat or cold. Many people all over the world live much of the year if not all of the year in one deadly temperature or the other so it is critical that everyone take a second to understand how to survive in these common everyday situations. It is sad how many people die each year and their lives could have been saved by taking a couple simple precautions. How many more lives could have been saved if those around them recognized the symptoms of heat stroke and hypothermia

Flu / Plague / H1N1 - It seems like every year there is a new disease we are warned about and need to learn how to survive. It is just a matter of time before one of these pandemics tears through us. It wouldn't be the first and probably wouldn't be the last time it happens to mankind. Over the past decade we have been warned about SARS, Bird Flu and most recently swine flu. Deadly diseases happens all the time and understanding how to keep you and your family healthy and safe from these deadly outbreaks might be the difference if your area is ever affected. There are very few things you can do to help yourself once you have a deadly illness so learning how to prevent yourself from ever catching the illness is the easiest way to survive a deadly flu outbreak. I think they say an "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", well in this case it's worth ten pounds of cure.

Tornados - You have a great chance of surviving tornados today thanks to the great advances in technology. As long as you have a plan you should have plenty of warning and have no problem surviving deadly tornados. However understanding where to go and where not to go can be the difference in living through a tornado or dying. While we do normally get plenty of warning with a tornado sometimes they have the ability to surprise us in situations where there might not be ideal tornado protection and knowing what to use for cover and what not to use might save lives.

Riots - I know you say there is no way you will ever come across a riot and I am just being a paranoid however, many riots happen spontaneously and in worst case scenarios the only warning is people running in the other direction. Mobs can turn angry at the drop of a hat. Riots have broken out in almost every country over the past ten years and many have been deadly as well as massive amounts of property damage. France was almost shut down by riots and I'm sure most people like me never imagined that could happen. There are riots at many major/controversial political gatherings, religious gathering and even when celebrating /protesting the outcome of a sporting event. Riots are usually promoted by a current event and normally a little easier to avoid than many of the other deadly situations you might encounter but knowing what to do to survive in this highly volatile situation could save yourself from becoming a target. (...of the rioters or the police.)

Hurricanes - Hurricanes hit huge areas and can devastate thousands of square miles in a few hours. Hurricanes can have winds just as strong as those of tornadoes. It just covers a much larger area carries a ton of rain with it. The nice thing about hurricanes is they give PLENTY of warning. As long As you and your family know what to do and where to go then your lives should be safe. I wish I could say the same for your property if it's in the path of one of these massive storms. Hurricanes wipe out large areas so you might be forced to pull some Off the grid survival until help shows up.

Terrorist Attack - Chemical, Nuke or Conventional Bomb - Let's admit it, there are some CRAZY people out there. There are also people who think by killing civilians that they might be able to put fear into a population and manipulate them to do their bidding. While however unlikely it is that you will ever encounter a terrorist attack it is possible and the few minutes you took to prepare might be the few most important minutes of your life.

Floods - It is amazing how powerful a shallow fast moving stream can be. Flash floods can strike even when it's not raining. (Just b/c it's not raining on you doesn't mean it's not raining somewhere else.) During Katrina it was the floods that destroyed New Orleans not the actual hurricane. The levies gave way and New Orleans became a lake. They are lucky it was a river running through downtown b/c it would have swept entire houses away and no one would have been able to survive on their roofs. (If followed hurricane procedures they never would have been trapped on their roofs.)

Fires - Fires happen EVERYWHERE. Fires can happen in your home or office, at your children's' schools, in the wilderness and even planes, trains and automobiles. There are some simple steps and plans you should put in place in case of fire. There are procedures that everyone in the family should do in case of fire. You might be separated by flames from the ones you want to help and they might have to escape a different way to just walking through and discussing your plan a few times could be the difference in saving you and your family from a life time of pain.

Draught / Heat - Draughts take a while to kick in and some can be a lot more serious than others. Not all draughts can be deadly but when draughts do kick in they make an entire area uninhabitable and leave those who live in the draught stricken areas with two different choices. Bring in water and the resources needed to make the area livable and the other option is to leave the area and relocate.

Everyone will encounter at least one of the ten deadly situations above and most people will encounter several. Thankfully for most of us it will be limited to extreme temperatures or near misses with violent weather. Taking a few minutes to understand what to do in these deadly emergency situations can save you and your family from a life time of pain. This is information we all hope we never use. Understanding what to do in fairly common deadly situation will provide you and your family with additional insurance because we all think "It will never happen to me."

We'd love to hear your experiences with any of the disasters above.  What disasters have you encountered which we left out?

I have had several of these disasters close to me and affect more severely friends and family. Growing up in the Midwest I have seen too many tornado's to count, floods and extreme temperatures. The better you are prepared for these events the less you will fear them, the quicker you will recover from them and the less impact they will have on you psychologically, financially and physically
