Where to find potable water in emergency situations

We all know the obvious places like streams, ponds, lakes etc., always keep in mind the faster moving the water, the better. There are some additional places you can find already clean drinking water before you have to resort to grabbing your water from nature.

Your pipes should still be full so if you release the air pressure you should be able to get some water that way but there are many easier ways to find water. If you are releasing pressure in your pipes to get water it must be real bad and you are going to have to find a better more long term solution. Ice Cubes!! If you are in a short term situation and you need water but aren’t sure what water is clean. Melted ice cubes are an easy way to find clean water. It won’t be much but this is the easiest and quickest way to find drinking water if all other options have been exercised.

Your water heater should have anywhere from 25 to 75 gallons of water in it. All the water in there should be clean and safe for human consumption. This is a great place to find safe drinking water.

I’m not sure if I could do this but I guess I could if I had to. I would probably use one of the purifying methods below first but in all reality the water at the top of your toilet should be safe for drinking. As long as you don’t add chemicals to the top of your toilet that water hasn’t touched anything considered unsanitary yet. The water in the top of your toilet is the water waiting to go into the toilet so it hasn’t been tainted yet. Again, this is only in emergency situations and you can always use one of the sanitation processes below to clean anything you think is unsafe.

There is also plenty of rainwater to be had. There are different ways to collect rain water which we will discuss later. If you have to find water in nature, try and find water that has a current or is constantly moving like a river or a stream. Make sure you use one of the processes below to sterilize any water found in nature. Yes it may look clean but the worst thing you can do is drink bad water. Better to be safe than sorry. Boiling water is always easy to do.

Places to find NON DRINKABLE WATER but still useful for other purposes.

Water beds have a lot of water but it’s also filled with tons of chemicals that aren’t good for anyone to drink. This is a great place to find water to use for cleaning.

Pools have a ton of water but they are full of chemicals that are terrible for consumption. This water is good only for hand washing and cleaning.

(Eventually pools will become super nasty becoming over grown with algae etc. They will become spawning grounds for mosquitoes and therefore all sorts nasty diseases etc. I would rather people just drain their pools if we had a serious problem but I imagine most people who don’t know better will end up drinking out of them.)

Now that you have found water you have to make sure that water is clean and safe for human consumption. (The contaminated water might kill you faster than if you didn’t drink it.)

There are three generally accepted ways to sterilize water to make it safe for drinking.
